Welcome to the Monash University Student Theatre, an engine room of creativity....
It's hard to believe that when I first walked into MUST all I was looking for was a fun way to fill the uni break. Although it's probably equally hard to believe that the show that started it all was an original comedy/musical/Simpsons parody set in Monash University.
I'd loved theatre for a long time, in fact by this point I'd already made it my major, but I absolutely did NOT want to perform, thank you very much. That's how I had landed myself in the stage manager position with the Shakespeare on the River Festival two years prior, although that was a much more informal undertaking.
Looking back over my portfolio of works, I can clearly see that Love of the Nightingale honed my organisation skills, The Drunkards taught me how to manage large props and set, The Bacchae taught me how to manage people, and The D'oh Show well and truly showed me the ropes.
Training under The D'oh Show's excellent head SM, Anna Tchernomoroff, my head became filled with new terminology and a growing understanding of theatre timelines and processes. Something was clicking in my head - the slow realisation that stage management lay in the middle of the Venn diagram of the things I'm good at; organisation, creativity and working with people.
By the end of The D'oh Show's whirlwind run, I felt like a whole new world had been opened up for me - and I was banging down the director's door asking to be assigned a new show!
The D'Oh Show was performed to hundreds of Monash University students, with 4 back-to-back shows a day from Feb 25-28, 2019.
