Monsteen, a participatory theatre work where teens create characters and face off with friends and enemies at a supernatural high school.
It’s just another school day for teenagers in the world of Monsteen. But, as a heatwave hits, tensions bubble to the surface.
Inspired by cosplay and RPGs, Monsteen is a psychologically immersive performance that leads teens into a game of collaborative world-building and social risk.
Four young cast members help catalyse the action, but as the school day begins, each player finds themselves with a chance to build their character, make friends, make enemies and participate in the world. They navigate class politics, head to secret hangouts, begrudgingly have dinner with parents and choose sides in ugly friendship battles.
As the game progresses, players must try and come to terms with their monstrous side. What do they see in the mirror and can they embrace it?
"One of the biggest rewards is seeing the social permission that young people give themselves to explore. In a way... (Monsteen is)... offering an opportunity for young people to re-wild themselves." - Ella Dann-Limon, Stage Magazine
